Soon to Break Camp, Cardinals Select Kelly Over Martinez

Sunday the St. Louis Cardinals made the decision to insert Joe Kelly into the starting rotation instead of Carlos Martinez. The rationale provided today by Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in an interview with Will Leitch of Sports on Earth is that they were both effective and there was not much separating them performance-wise. Further, the Cardinals believe Martinez is much better as a reliever than is Kelly. So, they kind of split the difference, with Martinez returning to the lights-out setup role he had at the end of 2013, and Kelly getting a chance to perhaps get his strikeouts in line with the brilliant arm he possesses. Watch this space. Many things will change and/or fall into place as the season progresses.

The rotation today is comprised of Adam Wainwright, Shelby Miller, Michael Wacha, Lance Lynn, and Joe Kelly.  I produced a video on where things stand with the Cardinals, including information about where second baseman Kolten Wong might bat in the lineup.
